Nigerian Society Mining Engineers (NSME) is a volunteer professional organization founded on 24th June, 1989 and incorporated on 23rd March, 1990 to serve its members and the Nigerian minerals industry. NSME has its secretariat along Barkin Ladi Road in Bukuru, Plateau State, Nigeria and membership of over 900. NSME has continued to evolve over the years to meet the needs of its members and the minerals industry. It has objectives including:
The National body is the apex of the Society and run by the Council. The Council comprises elected National Executive Members, Fellows-in-Council, Members-in- Council, and Institutional Members-in-Council. The President of the Society is the Chairman of the Council.
The Society has six Zonal Chapters run by their respective Executive Committees. These Zonal Chapters are:
The activities of the Society include among others:
The Society publishes technical journal: “The Nigerian Mining Journal”; a quarterly news bulletin- “The Miner”; Annual Conference and seminar proceedings and other hoc publications.
The Society provides services (technical, managerial, or professional) to its members to improve their competence through workshops, seminars, lectures and conferences. The need of these services is more paramount in our profession than in most other professions because of the increasing advances in the fields of engineering and technology.
Membership is open to all who satisfy the examination requirement of the Council of the Society (degree or its equivalent in mining and/or mineral processing obtained from institutions accredited as such by relevant accreditation bodies in Nigeria).
The Society consists of Fellows and Members, who are known as Corporate Members.
The Society also has attached to :
Honorary Fellows, Graduate Members, Affiliates, and Students,
all of whom are collectively referred to as Non-corporate Members.
In addition to the Classes of Membership, there are Institutional Members.
