ABRIDGED PROFILE OF ENGR. SUNDAY OLUSEGUN OLADIPO, FNSME, FNMGS

Engr. Sunday Olusegun Oladipo, FNSME, FNMGS was born on October 1, 1950 into the family of Deacon Enoch Oladipo (of blessed memory). He attended Baptist Day School, Ijagbo-Offa, Kwara State (1958-1963) and Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro, Ogun State (1964-1968). After his secondary education, on the insistence of his father, Engr. Oladipo taught briefly at Nawarudeen Primary School, Jos before proceeding as a private student to the Federal School of Mines, Jos, Plateau State (1969-1971) where he obtained Diploma in Mining Practice.

 

Armed with the Diploma, he started his mining career as an Assistant Technical Officer (Mines) in the then Federal Ministry of Mines and Power, Mines Division, Jos in August 1973. In 1976 with the sponsorship of Kwara State Government, Engr. Oladipo proceeded to Montana College of Mineral Science & Technology, Butte, Montana, USA where he earned Associate Degree of Science/Engineering in 1978; B.Sc. Mining Engineering in 1980 and M.Sc. Mining Engineering in 1981. While in Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology, Engr. Oladipo conducted the Survey of Geothermal Resources of Yellowstone National Park (USA) and researched on the Solar Energy Project under the Renewable Alternative Energy Sources Program and Selection of Best Methods of beneficiation of various copper and gold ores from around Montana State. He was awarded the Charles J. Adami Scholarship for upper classmen majority in mining Engineering on May 3, 1979 and was appointed a Teaching Assistant on Computer Courses, after his first degree in the Mining Engineering Department of Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology. Engr. Oladipo also served as the President of International Students of the Institution (1980- 1981).

 

On his return to Nigeria, he did his National Service (NYSC) as a lecturer in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1981-1982). After his NYSC, he returned to the Mines Department as an Inspector of Mines Grade II and rose through the ranks to Acting Director of Artisanal & Small-scale Mining Department of Ministry of Mines & Steel Development before his retirement from public service in August 2008. Since November 2009 Engr. Oladipo has been the Acting Head of Department and Contract Lecturer (Mining Engineering) in Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences, Jos, Plateau State.

Engr. Oladipo is a foundation member of the Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers (NSME) and held the elected post of Social Secretary of the Society (1991-1996) and the post of Publicity Secretary (1996- 2003). He was also elected as a Fellows’ Representative- in- Council of the Society (2003- 2007) and became the 4th President of Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers (2007- 2011). Engr. Oladipo is a Fellow of NSME and Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS). He is registered mining engineer with the Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG). He was the Chairman of NMGS Abuja Chapter (2004-2011) and the Secretary of Kano/Jigawa NMGS Chapter (2001-2003).

 

For Engr. Oladipo, it is not all work; he has always found time for games and hobbies. He was a key member of the Benue-Plateau State hockey team between 1968 and 1976, which he captained to the 1975 National Sports Festival. His prowess first came to national limelight with his call up to the Nigerian National Hockey Team in 1971. In USA, Engr. Oladipo joined his college soccer team in 1976 in which he wore its captain’s band (1978- 1979) and held administrative posts of team, Secretary and Treasurer (1997-1980). Engr. Oladipo also made remarkable incursion into other sports such as badminton where he was the double runner-up in the Montana State Badminton Tournament in 1978. He also plays volleyball, table and lawn tennis and naturally loves photography and collection of minerals. He has received several awards including Charles J. Adami Scholarship Award for Upper Classmen majoring in Mining Engineering 1979 and 2012 Special Award of Honour by Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers. Engr. Oladipo is happily married and blessed with children.
